Travis Collinson’s paintings allude to the early portraits of Lucian Freud and the classical Northern Renaissance paintings of Vermeer, each picture a dramatic story told between silences, each figure twisted as within their own mind, the angles skewed, the world out of kilter.
Working from personal photographs and sketches Collinson reinterprets the natural word around him, attempts to capture the psychological footprint we leave behind in every space we enter. Rooms are never neutral, they are imbued with a memory, are receptacles of our behaviour and it is in this nebulous space that we find Collinson exploring, attempting to capture that juxtaposition between the physical and the psychological, the material and the emotional. As he says himself:
My paintings explore the representation of individuals and places close to me. They are a collection of thoughts and observations gathered together to form complex images, both seemingly real yet subtly unsettling. It is within the confines of these observations that I am continually intrigued by the ability of objects to reveal their truths as well as create mysteries that prevail in the subconscious.
